What is Disability

Important types of disabilty:
Intellactual disabilty:
Intellectual disability (ID), once called mental retardation, is characterized by below-average intelligence or mental ability and a lack of skills necessary for day-to-day living. People with intellectual disabilities can and do learn new skills, but they learn them more slowly.

  •  Intellectual functioning. Also known as IQ, this refers to a person’s ability to learn, reason, make decisions, and solve problems.A person is considered intelletually disabled if he or she has an IQ of less then 70 to 75.
  •  Adaptive behaviors. These are skills necessary for day-to-day life, such as being able to communicate effectively, interact with others, and take care of oneself.
  • Adaptive functioning:Adaptive functioning is affected by three basic skill sets. The first skill set is conceptual skills. This includes reading, numbers, money, time, and communication skills. The second skill set is social skills. These skills help us to get along well with others. These skills include understanding and following social rules and customs; obeying laws; and detecting the motivations of others in order to avoid victimization and deception. The third skill set is practical life skills. These are the skills needed to perform the activities of daily living. This includes feeding, bathing, dressing, occupational skills, and navigational skills.
